Clean Energy Trust
BRITE works with the Clean Energy Trust to provide tech and energy startups with a greater array of support and development options. Clean Energy Trust (CET) brings cleantech innovation to market by finding, funding, and growing high-impact cleantech startups from the Midwest. Structured as a nonprofit, we make seed investments and provide mentorship, coaching, access to a national network, and patient, hands-on support to help entrepreneurs scale and succeed. BRITE refers clean tech startups to join the Cleantech Open and receive additional assistance receiving support for and developing their energy solutions. Since 2005 Cleantech Open (CTO) has trained over 1200 early-stage clean technology startup entrepreneurs through its annual business accelerator. A majority of CTO alumni have survived the merciless technology startup “valley of death” and gone on to raise $1.2 billion and create over 3,000 clean economy jobs. Great Lakes Energy Institute
BRITE has worked with the Great Lakes Energy Institute to assist startups coming out of the extensive research and development performed there. Catalyzing breakthroughs in energy sustainability that address the most pressing problems facing our world by empowering their faculty, students, and partners. Research is at the heart of their work at Case Western Reserve University. Their faculty, staff and students are driven to expand knowledge, deepen understanding and contribute to the well-being of society. They consistently rank in the top 20 private research institutions. In 2013-2014, CWRU received more than $310 million to fund 1,600 projects. Creating sustainable energy solutions is unlike any challenge our society has ever faced. The ramifications reach into every aspect of our lives, from international relations and economic development to ecological wellness. To meet this challenge, we need innovative approaches to research across a broad range of disciplines. CWRU and the Great Lakes Energy Institute helps foster a collaborative, translational research model that more rapidly filters innovative ideas and integrates them into the marketplace. BRITE assists tech-enabled energy startups with validation through a network of technical experts in energy storage, IoT, and grid integration. Thought leaders from industry and academia are accessible through BRITE’s network, including IN2 channel partners. Innovation Fund Northeast Ohio
BRITE works with Innovation Fund Northeast Ohio and Innovation Fund America to connect entrepreneurs with the funds necessary to apply their developed technologies. Innovation Fund America is a nonprofit partnering with community colleges to accelerate the growth of technology startups through early-stage funding and education. Innovation Fund Northeast Ohio was founded by the Lorain County Community College Foundation in 2007 to fill the capital needs of Northeast Ohio startups at the earliest stage of development. They think like investors, but their return on investment is a little different. They support startups so they can impact our economy and inspire future innovators. BRITE is an Entrepreneurial Services Provider (ESP) through JumpStart Inc., a venture development organization that combines the principles of (private) venture capital and (non-profit) economic development to help entrepreneurs start and grow companies. BRITE is one of 12 partner organizations in the Northeast Ohio Startup Network. However, because BRITE is the only energy incubator in the state, BRITE can work in all 88 Ohio counties as part of the Ohio Third Frontier. Kent State University
BRITE and Kent State University partnership allows for and encourages collaboration between BRITE portfolio companies and Kent State on research and the commercialization of the intellectual properties of that research. Kent State has a strong interest in developing new collaborations in the energy and cleantech space, and BRITE assists them by connecting them to new startups to complement their efforts. BRITE works closely with the NASA Glenn Research Center to connect them with startups making strides in technology and energy solutions. NASA Glenn has aided BRITE startups in further developing and applying the technologies they have developed in the areas of power, energy storage and conversion. BRITE provides entrepreneurial services through the Ohio Third Frontier program. Third Frontier aims to support innovative startup companies across the state, making Ohio the destination for technology entrepreneurs. BRITE works with Team NEO to anticipate the impact of the changing energy industry on Northeast Ohio. Team NEO is a business development organization focused on accelerating economic growth and job creation throughout the 18 counties of Northeast Ohio. They do this by building partnerships among local organizations, businesses and government and marketing the region as a whole. Drawing on the combined strength of our 18 counties, they represent a $200+ billion economy with a regional workforce of 2 million and more than 25 higher education institutions. BRITE is a matchmaker for startups seeking capital from a variety of sources including individuals, the state, venture firms, and others. BRITE is a founding partner of Valley Growth Ventures, a for profit investment fund. Since inception, BRITE has helped its clients raise over $60 million in private investment. Youngstown Business Incubator
BRITE works with the Youngstown Business Incubator to jointly house support for minority-owned businesses by providing State of Ohio Minority Business Assistance Centers (MBAC). YBI also uses its affiliation with Youngstown State University to focus on supporting companies developing implementations for software and additive manufacturing and offering rigorous programs to drive entrepreneurship.
