Accelerate Wind Wins Award to Expand Rural Distributed Wind

An image shows what Accelerate Wind's technology will look like on buildings.

Accelerate Wind, a BRITE member company based in Birmingham, Alabama, received a $231,993 award from the U.S. Department of Energy, marking a significant milestone in advancing distributed wind energy technology. As part of the DOE’s 2024 Competitiveness Improvement Project (CIP), this funding will enable Accelerate Wind to perform full-scale testing of their innovative 12-kW prototype rooftop wind turbine at Windward Engineering in Utah. This development not only highlights Accelerate Wind’s commitment to enhancing wind technology but also demonstrates its capacity to contribute actively to the U.S. energy landscape.

This initiative by the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy underlines a strategic move towards bolstering U.S. rural and small-scale energy infrastructure. By promoting clean energy options for farmers, small business owners, and electric co-ops, the U.S. is actively working toward achieving cleaner and more sustainable energy practices that are crucial for long-term environmental and economic stability.

“DOE is working to ensure that farmers, rural small businesses, and electric cooperatives have more options for affordable, safe, and reliable clean energy systems,” said Jeff Marootian, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. “These investments in projects to expand rural distributed wind will also support U.S. energy independence, a cornerstone of the Biden-Harris Administration’s clean energy goals.”
