Adena Power Secures Exclusive Battery License from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

Lewis Center, OHIO (February 19, 2024) – Adena Power is excited to recently secure an exclusive license to Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s (PNNL) sodium metal halide battery patents to allow for the use of iron instead of nickel. This enabling cathode technology complements Adena’s planar cell architecture for a low-cost, high-performance energy storage solution.

The close collaboration between Adena and researchers at PNNL has enabled Adena to rapidly advance their cutting-edge sodium-based battery technology for grid-scale energy applications. For emerging battery technologies to succeed commercially, they must have a clear and viable path to a low-cost battery solution that makes energy storage projects economically feasible. While the sodium metal halide battery chemistry has excellent round-trip efficiency, calendar and cycle life, and safety, its commercial adoption has been significantly limited due to cost and scalability challenges. The planar cell design and iron-based cathode address these challenges.

The partnership between Adena Power and PNNL is a perfect example of the Energy Storage Grand Challenge vision of the U.S. Department of Energy. The vision is to innovate here, manufacture here, and deploy the technology everywhere. Adena is taking the innovative battery technology developed by PNNL beyond the lab and working with Current Chemicals, an industrialization partner in Cleveland, Ohio, to expand the manufacturing scale within the U.S. using secure, domestic supply chains.

About Adena Power Adena Power is an energy storage provider using domestic raw materials and manufacturing to deliver sodium batteries to commercial and industrial markets. After spending two years talking with utilities and renewable developers, we understand Li-ion will only get us so far and that the market needs battery solutions that are safer, have a flexible duration, and, most of all, have a lower installed cost. Adena is in the demonstration phase of this IP-protected energy storage solution and intends to launch its first product early in 2025.
